Sports

Here at Mercy Primary School we are committed to supporting every child to be physically active and have positive attitudes towards a healthy and active lifestyle.
Our school is an Active School having received a Distinction at our latest Active Flag appraisal. We encourage all of our children to participate in daily exercise and have fun doing this. All classes take part in regular movement breaks throughout the day.

We were delighted to be chosen as the flagship school for the launch of Active School Week 2023. We were visited by Junior Minister Hildegard Naughton and Karen Cotter, the National Coordinator of Active School Flag.
We believe in giving our pupils the opportunity to access a wide range of sporting and physical based activities, allowing them to develop new skills through PE in school, after school clubs, and inter-school sporting competitions.

We also look to establish partnerships with local sports clubs, and often arrange for guest coaches to visit our school for workshops, sample sessions, or longing programs. We are very grateful to the local clubs who offer their expertise and facilities in helping us to provide opportunities to our children. Some of our partners include Father Griffin’s Eire Og GAA club, Galway Titan’s Basketball, Louise Curran’s School of Irish Dancing and Galway Hibernian’s Soccer club.

Each year we give our children the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports. These begin in September with Cumann na mBunscol’s Gaelic football competitions and Cross Country races, and we then focus on Olympic handball, which actually continues all the year through, as well as basketball during the winter months. Once spring arrives, We begin preparing for the FAI 5 aside school soccer competitions, City Sports athletics, and Cumann na mBunscol Gaelic Football competitions. Children from third and fourth class avail of swimming lessons each year also.

We are very fortunate to have a wonderful staff who are all dedicated to promoting physical activity among our students. This is evident by the wide variety of afterschool clubs which are offered to children throughout the year.
We have 2 lovely new sets of school jerseys which have been kindly sponsored by Clean Cut Meals. These jerseys were designed by our own students and the children wear them with great pride when representing our school.
